The Different Types Of Yarn

By Teri Farley

An Asheville yarn is a filament or fiber that has been formed into one continuous strand. This is commonly used for manufacturing of thread or weaving of textiles. The processes by which yarns are made heavy involve carding, combing, drawing out to roving and spinning of staple fiber which can be wool, linen or cotton. Continuous filaments like nylon, rayon and silk may also be formed directly to become yarns or cut short to be prepared as staple fibers.

Yarns are typically twisted so they turn out strong and smooth. The manner in which they will be twisted clockwise is referred to as Z twisting. Some are twisted counterclockwise as well. This is called S twisting. Some yarns come as ply. These are comprised of at least two strands having been twisted together.

There are the slub types of yarns as well. These are characterized as having areas that shall be left untwisted. They usually vary in terms of diameter and are great considerations for ornamental effects. The more complex types include Ratine and Boucle yarns. These are made using yarns of varying tensions and diameters.

There are also yarns that have been made with cellulose bases. These come with unique characteristics, making them suitable for several purposes, from knitting to crocheting projects. Viscose yarns can be referred to as rayon as well. They are not fibers in themselves, but rather are processed cellulose bases that can be used for making durable rayon.

If you want yarns that have thickness, then you might want to consider getting a worsted yarn. This is often made from strong woolen fibers. Worsted types have unique properties, especially with how their fibers were prepared. Before spinning, proper combing will be necessary so as to retain longer strands in parallel and get rid of the shorted ones. Finished products turn up not only easy to handle but durable as well.

Organic yarns are very different from the aforementioned types. These have undergone production that is entirely organic in process. Organic types do not cause negative impact on the environment. This could also translate to their production being done ethically, by companies that maintain responsible attitude in terms of dealing with employees and yarn sources. However, the downside to these types is that they cost a lot more than the standard types.

There are several factors that must be taken into account when it comes to choosing which yarns to make use of. The first one is the project for which the material will be used. People who intend for yarns to be made into clothes, bags, or other items that will be made to hold other items, durable and high quality materials will be essential.

It should also not be forgotten how these materials come in many different colors. Crafters should go for the color which they think will suit their project best. Some shops may only sell in limited colors though it will always pay to check first.

Cost will always be an important factor when it comes to buying items. Crafters should also think about how much the Asheville yarn of their choosing costs. Prices can be very much affected by type, quality and measurement necessary.
