By Cathy Mercer

Vacations mean different things to different people. Some want beaches or relaxing by the pool, sipping drinks. Of course, there are others that want much more than just a chance to get. In reality, there is so much the world offers, which can only be enjoyed through one's own eyes. Take for example everything that can be experienced in memorable travel to Iceland.

The Nordic country is situated very far north, and in fact, its capital is the most northern of all world capitals. This island is actually resting right where the Arctic and Atlantic oceans meet. It has the smallest population, with about 320,000 citizens, most of which live in the southwestern region. What's most interesting about this European country is that it is actually active volcanically speaking.

Although it is so far north, it has a temperate climate because it is warmed by the Gulf Stream. People first settled there in 874 AD and the country gained its independence in 1918. Although it was one of the poorest economies of the world, it has since become one of the most developed and prosperous nation worldwide. Corporations flock to Iceland because of its low corporate taxes, yet the citizens enjoy a welfare system that is true to other Nordic countries.

Traveling to Iceland is easy with regards to communication, because most of its citizens do speak English. So for those who are weary of traveling to countries where communication might be challenging, they can feel safe here. That's what makes it even better, because so many can visit this wonderful country and all it has to offer, such as its ability to survive on renewable energy.

It has an inner plateau with lava fields and sands, mountains and glaciers. It has glacial rivers that flow through its lowlands and on occasion, polar bears that visit from Greenland. There are none actually living on the island. Of course, no matter how temperate the climate, there won't be much swimming in the ocean going on because it is chilly nonetheless, but they did come up with solutions.

In fact, the people of this wonderful nation have come up with incredible solutions including 170 geothermal outdoor swimming pools. The water is the perfect temperature so people can enjoy a nice swim. Also, when visiting, make sure the glacier lagoon is on the list, as well as possibly riding on Icelandic horses.

What's important about vacationing here is to allow for the pleasure that all these differences provide. Breathtaking views and fascinating geysers make this place extremely special. Perhaps understanding all its renewable energy, and how the geysers provide heat and hot water to all the citizens naturally would intrigue you enough.

For some more activities, taken some whale watching or perhaps go diving in its glorious waters. It doesn't have to be a relaxing or sightseeing tour as there are lots of action-packed activities to take part in as well. For example, enjoy a rigorous hike or bike ride through the mountains, or go skiing or river rafting. Travel to Iceland is never boring, and to the contrary, is full of excitement.
