Basic Tips In Learning Tarot Card Reading

By Olivia Rostigus

Learning to read the Tarot is easier than you think. People tend to make it much more difficult than it really is. It really is not hard to learn to read the Tarot. The more consistent time you spend at learning to do psychic tarot readings, the sooner it will become automatic. You didn't learn to tie your shoes overnight and it is much the same when learning how to read the Tarot. Be easy on yourself when taking on a project like this.

Once you have decided to buckle down and spend time with your Tarot cards, each and every day you will learn something new. How fast you learn it will depend on how much time you spend on your new venture. You cannot learn it overnight, anymore than you learned to ride a bike overnight. Just be willing to put the time in and soon you will begin to build on your skills. You will be glad you did once you master this fun project. It is important that once you start, you continue.

A good standard and very basic Tarot deck is the Rider Waite deck of cards. They are fairly simple to learn and the pictures are plain enough that you can easily figure out what they are trying to say. The simple decks, like the one just mentioned, are far easier to learn with. Wait until you have the basics down before trying other decks because they can be confusing until you are very familiar with a simpler version.

I really recommend getting a good book like Idiot's Guide To Tarot. The people who wrote it did a great job and really simplified what are the most important things to focus on for the beginner. Not only do they have a great sense of humor, but they are masters at breaking down what you need to know at first. They make it interesting while you are learning and take the fear out of an otherwise complicated task.

These books can be purchased from Amazon and a used copy will work just fine. I do recommend buying a new Rider-Waite deck of cards. Older, used cards carry other owner's energy and can also be hard to shuffle. You can find new decks online for around $10. You should consider spending 20-30 minutes at least three times per week when starting. The more time you spend in the beginning, the more new information will stick with you. If you only practice readings once a month, you will find you have to start over each time you begin. Remember, consistency is key to memorizing new information.

The Celtic layout of the cards, or 'spread' as it is more commonly called, is the most basic and widely used. If you will start with this one, other spreads will come to you easily.

When you first begin, tape four pieces of computer paper together to make a large rectangle. Then, using your guide book, write down each of the positions where you will be laying your cards and label them. Each position has a meaning and it is important to memorize this basic step before moving on. Once you have mastered and memorized each of the positions, the rest comes fairly easy.

For this next step, I suggest using your guide book. It will be very useful to you when you have a visual right in front of you to begin memorizing each of the card positions. Most decks also come with a small book and some basic layouts for you to begin the learning phase. But, ultimately, a good guide book will become your bible while you are in the learning phase of your new venture. A good guide book, like the Idiot series, which has a Tarot guide book, is your most important tool in the beginning. Once you feel you know each position in the Celtic Cross, you are ready to discard your paper.

Our brain can only absorb so much information at one time and that is why I highly recommend just 20-30 minutes at each practice session in the beginning. Take it a little at a time until you have the meanings of each position in the layout memorized. Each time you practice will build on the last session until a few months later, you will be able to do Tarot readings without the book. Once you feel you do not need the book for each card (only for reference once in a while) you will also find the added benefit of your psychic ability and how much it has improved.

One day, you might feel comfortable enough to begin reading for family and friends. Before you do that, get to know each card and meaning. Together, they all tell a story, so, learning how to put the story together will take practice. Learning the Tarot takes focus and the more time you spend with them, the better you will become. You may one day be proficient enough to do psychic readings using the Tarot to earn extra money.
