How To Do Heavy Equipment Service

By Eliza Mendoza

Heavy equipment is a large machinery or vehicle used mostly in construction or agricultural work for transportation purposes. Operating such machinery can be very costly. Due to poor maintenance this machinery will require to be repaired every now and then which slowly reduces its life span and it is also not good for business when the machinery keeps breaking down. Daily maintenance of this machinery takes at least 15 minutes and you can easily identify a problem before it calls for a whole day repair work. Machinery which is poorly maintained may also be a safety hazard for your employees. Mentioned below are the various periodic heavy equipment service procedures which are very helpful.

First and foremost, you should make a good plan of the maintenance procedure required and the reasons to adhere on it. Some things have to be done daily while others require a strict use of a specific plan that has been set. After you have laid down your plan, there after you can continue in the daily steps of your machineries maintenance process.

During daily routine, you should check the various pieces of the machinery to be operated. One should check if there is any worn out part or any sign of coolant or oil leakage. The tires should be inflated everyday to the right pressure to avoid bursting. Debris on the machinery should be well cleaned. One should feel the chains and belts to ensure they are held tightly in position.

Greasing should be done thoroughly on the parts that are joined together for lubricating purposes on daily bases. Protection signs and gears should be placed in well displayed place and where they can easily be acquired. Important fluids such as hydraulic, coolant or even oils should be checked daily. Just in case the levels are below the required one, you can top up before the start of any work. Putting into use a machinery with less fluid required is very dangerous as it reduces the durability of the machinery. One should also remember to clean the air filters in case there is any dirt.

If the machinery has been in use for about 3 months or even 500 hours it is wise that it should undergo a complete service. One of the best services is changing the oil, hydraulic filters and also the engine oil. Even the diesel fuel filters should also be changed after 3 months.

The last service should be done at the end of the period. This service is usually done at the end of the year. At this duration, the hydraulic oil and transmission fluids should be completely changed. One should ensure that antifreeze in the radiator is in good condition in order to work effectively on the winter season.

The fuel which was used during summer time should be drained from the tank and blended or arctic fuel refilled. This helps to avoid the fuel line from gelling when started in the cold season. The entire machinery or vehicle should be washed well while paying attention to clean the undercarriage and engine too. The air filters and cab should also be cleaned.

You should also clean the air conditioning unit. All the lights should be ensured that they are in order and in case one is not in good order, it should be replaced. All the tires should be checked and in case of any tear or wear then they should be replaced in this period of heavy equipment service. This will help in saving valuable time that can be lost in case of any damages.
