Different Reasons To Use A Flower Wreath

By Patty Goff

Wreaths can be made of a number of different components. Theses include fruit, branches, twigs or leaves. One of the materials most commonly used to create this item is flowers. A flower wreath is used across the board for various occasions, be it celebratory or otherwise.

A wreath of flowers is made from flora, of course, woven or positioned in such a way that a circle is formed. The size of the end result can be any size, ranging from average to very large. Across different cultures, this object can be used in a number of different ways.

One religious occasion where garlands are commonly placed on front doors or as part of interior decor is a Christmas wreath. Many wreaths are made of evergreens, symbolizing strength due to the fact that evergreens last throughout the year despite the harshest weather condition. Considering that poinsettias are considered to be the traditional flower of Christmas, a garland made of poinsettias is the perfect decorative item for this time of year.

You would probably have seen floral wreaths at memorial services or at a funeral. They have been used for this purpose as far back as Ancient Greece, where the circle is considered to be a symbol of ongoing life. Even the different flowers used in this type of garland are considered symbolic of resurrection and never ending life.

Different flowers represent different associations in those used for funerals. For example, in the funeral procession for a deceased young maiden, a girl of the same age would lead the procession carrying a garland comprised of white flowers, which were symbols of the purity of the deceased. In war memorial wreaths, sometimes poppy flowers are used.

A floral garland may also be worn on the head as a decorative accessory. This particular headdress is currently very popular among brides who choose a bohemian or outdoor theme for their wedding. Outside of weddings, headpieces and crowns made of flowers have been worn for centuries to celebrate festivals and pagan rituals such as the change of the seasons.

The Maypole festival celebrating May Day is just one example of a pagan festival that makes use of such an item. It is traditionally positioned on top of a high pole and young men race to the top to see who can get to it first. The winner gets to wear it as a crown on his head. The flowers used in this garland must be picked very early in the morning when the dew is still fresh, as it is believed that there is magic contained in the dew that will disappear by the time it dries.

Considering the popularity of this object as a household piece of decor, there are many different ways to make one at home that are simple and easy. The base can be purchased separately and then decorated using floral wire to attach branches, leaves and flowers. The more adventurous home crafter can attempt to make the entire thing from scratch by creating their own base from any number of materials including wire, foam or even cardboard.
