Treating Nocturnal Enuresis In Adults

By Jocelyn Davidson

Bed wetting in adults is unsettling and uncomfortable but long lasting solutions are available. Some children experience the difficulty out of genetic formation. This is likely to present a challenge during treatment but does not mean that treatment is impossible. Your primary health care provider conducts initial assessment and makes recommendations based on severity. Treatment restores comfort, self esteem and gives you back your normal life.

Some cases of voiding have genetic linkages but still have a solution. Treatment of nocturnal enuresis begins when a patient learns to monitor fluid intake through the day. The idea is to reduce consumption from late afternoon into the evening. This means that there will be reduced need to void in the course of the night.

The reduction in fluid consumption should not be at the expense of your health. This means that you should take the same amount of fluid but several hours before going to bed. Bladder volume training is one mechanism used in treatment without reducing intake of fluids. It works by taking adequate amounts of fluids while avoiding urination. It enables the bladder to increase its volume and enhance control.

There is a bed wetting alarm system that wakes you up when you get wet from the first drops. The device is attached to the underwear or pad used when sleeping. The alarm will wake you up so that you can proceed with urination in the lavatory.

The alarm system requires a lot of motivation and commitment to get used to and work. It will take the victim several days or weeks to get used to the procedure. The alarm reduces your bladder function capacity and in the process causes you to wake-up several times in the night. It has helped a lot of people to overcome the condition.

The choice of medicines is complemented by behavioral therapy. It comes with the risk of dependency meaning that in order to avoid bed wetting, you have to take the medication. Any medicine taken should be at the prescription of the doctor. This gives the doctor a chance to evaluate your case and determine the dosage.

Surgery is the last option if all others have failed. The idea is to utilize the non invasive options as far as possible. Any surgery should commence after a detailed discussion of side effects. The surgeons alter the orientations of tissues surrounding the bladder in order to regain normal functions.

Bed wetting can be managed effectively alongside your chosen treatment method. Some of the options available include use of mattress covers that are easier to clean. Some mattresses can absorb while others are made of vinyl. Other mattresses are waterproof and will make your experience better. Sheet protectors provide comfort at night and protect the skin from irritating reactions.

Patients may opt for absorbent briefs which are under wears with special features. The features are professionally designed to prevent leakage. There are disposable and reusable versions of the briefs. A patient with a sensitive or easily irritated skin is advised to use the disposable briefs. The market has provided numerous skin products that protect you from irritation. They come in the form of skin cleaning agents, soaps and lotions.
