Let's Get Some Zen Into Your Life

By Evan Sanders

I'm here to challenge you...and trust me...I never said any of this was going to be easy. So here's my challenge to you.

I want you to take up meditation. And before you go, "Oh common really?!" I want you to hear me out.

Give me a minute to really explain to you why taking on this practice can drastically alter your life. So lend me your ears.

Nothing will be "gained" from taking on a meditation practice. Absolutely nothing. In fact, instead of calling it meditation, let's just call it a sitting practice.

I'm asking you to find a place every single day, for 10 minutes a day (set your timer), cross your legs, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. That's it. No guided meditations, no ohms, no sound, nothing.

Breath and continue breathing as much as possible.

Now here's what I'm up to.

You're not gain anything from doing this practice, but you'll experience something else entirely. You'll experience "the falling away of things." Anxiety, fear, doubts, worry...they all start to fall away. As you slow down and focus on your breath, the most present thing you have, you will start to discover a great deal about your mind, your body, and your soul.

Naturally, thoughts and emotions are going to come into your mind and try to distract you. Let them do their thing and calmly come back to focusing on your breath. Come back to being in the present moment and leave everything else behind.

Mediation is about learning how to come back. That's all. It's about coming back over and over and over again no matter how many times your mind gets distracted. You keep coming back to the only moment you have, the present moment.

So give this a shot. And like with any practice we engage in, we all find ourselves falling in and out of it. We miss a day or two...or three. But hey, you know exactly what to do.

Always come back.
