The Common Denominator Of All Personal Stories And Testimonials Regarding Addiction

By Estelle Larsen

When one has an addiction, it is usually to either alcohol or drugs. Although it is quite a known fact that these two substances are definitely dangerous to health if taken in huge quantities, many people still actually suffer from alcohol or drug abuse. There are in fact a thousand personal stories and testimonials regarding addiction that are out there.

Now everyone knows that the story of each patient is different from one another however there are some elements that they would have in common. The one common denominator of all these people is that they are not satisfied with the way things are going about which is why they resort to vices to enjoy. It gives them a sense of security because it can temporarily help them forget their problems.

Each story would have a situation in which the storyteller tells why he resorted to his addiction in the first place. It could be because of depression, a trauma, or just the feeling of being empty. The storyteller would then reiterate that he had very low self confidence which is why he decided to use an external factor to make him feel good.

Of course if he would take these vices for the long term he will then notice some changes in his behavior. He becomes more irritable and starts to alienate himself from the people who are close to him. Of course because of this, the people around him will start noticing this change and will also try to help him overcome this.

Of course the abuse on his body will negatively affect his health after some time. While in the process, there would usually be a lot of chronic pain since the substances have already damaged the internal organs as well as some of the brain functions. This would lead not only to medical problems but to even some psychological problems as well.

From there they would usually try to get help in trying to stop their abuse. The very first thing to do in order to stop everything is to change from the outside to the inside. In other words, one has to first make sure that he stops his substance abuse before he tackles with his life issues and his own personal issues.

The storyteller would then share his experiences during his rehabilitation stage. It is here that through medical procedures, his body will be cleansed of all the drugs and the alcohol that is inside. Of course after the physical cleansing, he will then go through a mental and emotional cleansing as well most likely with a psychologist.

So as one can see, all the stories of people who have addictions have these elements in common. The great part about storytelling is that since all of them have some things in common, they all can relate to each other. Because they are all able to relate to each other, then at least they will have the feeling of not being alone and not having anyone understand them.
